Heavy tire training isn't just for strong men competitors and MMA fighters; it can help you get in shape no matter what your current physical condition. I'm going to give you a basic overview of how to properly flip a heavy tire, where to find one and what size you should start with.
First, the basic steps of tire flipping:
1. Get lower than you think you should - way low - on one side of the tire. Your feet should be close together - about 6 inches apart or so. Also, a good trick is to start with your chin on the tire.
2. Take a wide grip, drive from the hips and flip that sucker over!!
Two of the best places to get large tires like these are at a tire dealership for farm tires or one that specializes in earth moving equipment - many times, they will be more than happy to give you old tires; they have to pay a disposal fee anyhow - and you could care less about worn out tread if you're just working out with them.
If you're just looking to improve your general fitness level, a tire in the 200-300 pound range will be a good start. Stronger folks, athletes and the like should go for tires in the 300-500 pound range. If you're a very strong man or planning on competing (the tire flip is part of strongman competitions), you'll be training with tires in the 700-800 pound range.
So there you have a basic overview of how to flip a heavy tire, where to find one and what size you should start with. Train hard and train smart!!
