For all of the great benefits that a portable, inflatable air mattress can provide, there is one downfall that you should keep in mind - it is entirely possible for them to spring a leak. When that happens, you will need to fix it prior to the next use, otherwise you are in for one uncomfortable sleep. Now, finding a leak in an air mattress can sometimes be as easy as finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. Fortunately, there are a few tried and true methods that can help you easily locate the leak in order for you to fix it.
The first thing you are going to want to do is clear a space on the floor big enough for you to move around all sides of the air bed. Once you have enough space, then you should blow up your air bed to full capacity, this will ensure you have enough air to determine where the leak might be. Placing a tissue on one corner of the mattress, begin moving in a systematic fashion around the perimeter putting your weight on the mattress as you go. With your ear near the tissue, listen carefully for any hissing sound that may be present, this will indicate the location of the leak. If you have not found it on one side of the mattress, then flip it over and the check the other side. This is one of the easiest methods to use when checking for leaks because not only will you hear the hissing sound, but as the air is expelled from the mattress, it will make the tissue puff up as well.
Once you have found your leak, remove the tissue and see if it is visible. If you can not see the leak right away, you may need to use the tissue to further pin-point the exact location of the leak in order to fix it. Using a marker, clearly mark on the air mattress where the location of the leak is so that you can easily find it once the bed has been deflated. Then, using the instructions and the patch kit that came with your air bed, patch your leak.
